Scoliosis

Child Scoliosis, Early Detection is the Key

A state in which the spine is disformed into an S-shape or C-shape

Scoliosis is a state in which a patient’s spine is curved when seen from the front. It is a common condition among the adolescent period, but many patients miss the adequate timing for treatment since there are no major symptoms besides asymmetrical pelvis or shoulder heights. Most of the cases are ‘idiopathic scoliosis’, which occur without special causes, but the number of child patients are increasing along with long computer or smartphone uses, or bad lifestyle habits. Scoliosis can be effectively treated when diagnosed early, but when it is neglected without proper care, it can lead to further problems in blood circulation, decreased concentration. In extreme cases, patients may need to get a surgery.

    Causes

Innate causes Innate causes In some cases, patients have innately deformed or problematically structured spines. Siblings may have similar symptoms in this case.
Functional causes Bad posture or habits continued for a long time may become a cause for scoliosis.
Idiopathic causes This means that the symptoms occur without any special reasons. Patients may experience symptoms around age 10, before their growing period starts.

    Symptoms

    • Each side of shoulders or pelvis differs in height when standing or sitting in an upright position.
    • One side of the shoulder bone is more projected than the other.
    • One side of a shoe's sole wear down quicker due to different leg length, and it is difficult to stand upright in a single position.
    • Difficulties in sitting down for a long time, with back pain
    • Unnatural walking posture, difficulties in walking for a long time
    • Respiratory or digestive disorders without clear reasons

    Treatments

First, the whole body is scanned with X-ray to check for any structural problems in the spine as a whole. The front, back, left, right balance of ears, chin, shoulders, pelvis, and knees are also checked. Though child scoliosis may be quicker in progress compared to adults, the treatment effect is also much higher. In Phil Hospital for Korean Medicine, specialists in Rehabilitation Korean Medicine, Acupuncture, and Pediatrics work together for an accurate diagnosis, and customized treatments suited for each patients are carried out, including acupuncture, chuna manual therapy, and manual therapy. Other than clinical treatments, daily exercise routines are also taught in detail, so that our children can grow healthily.
